What is Jyotisha?
ज्योतिषं वेदचक्षुः
Jyotisha is the eye of the Vedas.
Jyotisha holds a distinguished position among the six Vedangas, the disciplines traditionally associated with the understanding and practice of the Vedas. It is traditionally described as the Chakshu — the eye — of the Vedas, because of its association with observing celestial phenomena and determining the appropriate time for Vedic activities.
The word Jyotisha is associated with Jyoti — light or illumination.
This gives us a beautiful way of understanding the purpose of Jyotisha.
It is not merely about knowing the future. It is about bringing light to the journey of life.
A horoscope can reveal patterns — our inherent strengths, tendencies, opportunities, challenges and the periods during which certain karmic possibilities may manifest more prominently.
But a horoscope should never be viewed as a judgement or an unchangeable sentence.
Jyotisha must therefore be understood alongside the concepts of Karma, Dharma and Purushartha — conscious human effort.
Knowing that a difficult period may lie ahead does not mean surrendering to it. Rather, such knowledge can help us prepare ourselves, exercise greater wisdom, strengthen our spiritual practices and make better decisions.
Likewise, knowing that a favourable period is approaching is useful only when we make appropriate use of the opportunities it presents.
This is where Jyotisha becomes much more than prediction.
It becomes guidance.
The role of an astrologer, therefore, is not simply to announce what will happen. It is to study the horoscope carefully, understand the interplay of Grahas, Bhavas, Rashis, Nakshatras, Dashas and other principles, and provide guidance with responsibility and humility.
Every horoscope represents an individual journey.
And every horoscope has something to teach us.
दीपो ज्योति परं ब्रह्म
May the light of knowledge illuminate our path.
